Averil has taught students ranging from ages 5 to 80. Her students enjoy her ability to encourage and stimulate their learning and enjoyment.
Students participate in several concerts and special occasions per year, take part in the Kiwanis Festival and pursue their advancement through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Examinations. Students are also encouraged to perform both as soloists and within ensembles such as flute duos and quartets, flute and clarinet duos, flute and guitar and many other combinations.
Many of Averil's students have excelled at their RCM exams winning Gold and Silver medals (indicating 1st and 2nd place across Ontario) and at the Kiwanis Festival.
Career Students: For the student considering a possible career in music, a disciplined and structured program is engendered to build sound and technical development. Musical creativity is fostered through development of phrasing and expression. Assistance and guidance is provided toward successful university and/or orchestral auditions.
Young Students: For the beginning and developing student, attention to proper breathing and understanding the physical support structure helps to produce clear, resonant sounds. Accuracy in rhythm, note reading and technical facility are emphasized. Sight reading is strengthened through playing flute duets and in small ensembles. RCM Exams are encouraged but not required. Priority is placed on enjoyment of the flute repertoire.
Adults: For adults pursuing the flute as a hobby, the same features apply but the program is structured to a time frame of practice that acknowledges busy schedules and commitments. Emphasis is placed on enjoyment.
Several programs are recommended during the Summer based on the level of achievement.
