| Biography |
Averil Spence-Clarke
Jamaican born Averil Spence-Clarke is a charismatic performer who has impressed audiences worldwide as both a soloist and an ensemble musician.
In addition to receiving myriad awards and scholarships throughout her illustrious career, Averil has also received a Degree in Music with Honours Performance from the University of Western Ontario.
After graduating, she pursued her career in Europe, the Caribbean, Canada and the U.S.A. Averil also continued her studies by taking lessons with Professor Geoffrey Gilbert of Stetson University, Deland, Florida and William Bennett, principal flautist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra, England. She also participated in performance masterclasses in England, Italy, U.S.A. and Canada with James Galway, Jean Pierre Rampal, Per Oien and Robert Aitken. An interest in conducting also led her to study conducting techniques with John Greer, former Conductor of the Canadian Opera Company.
Since settling in Windsor, Spence-Clarke has been very active as a performer with the flute and harp duo “Jubal’s Daughters” that she formed with harpist Anita Leschied. She also performs as a soloist and with a myriad of other musicians and ensembles.
Past President of the Windsor Federation of Musicians, Local 566; Woodwind Instructor and Music Consultant for KidsArtSmart and former Senior Flute Teacher and Flute Pedagogy Instructor with the Academie St. Cecile, Averil currently teaches from her own studio, ASC Music. Many of her students have been Gold and Silver Medal winners of the Royal Conservatory of Ontario and have received scholarships and rewards through the Kiwanis Festival.
