William Bennett
One of the foremost musical artists performing today, William Bennett has raised the profile of the flute to that of an instrument capable of a wide range of tonal colours, dynamics, and expression, giving it the depth, dignity, and grandeur of the voice or a string instrument.
He studied in London with Geoffrey Gilbert, and in France with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Marcel Moyse.
Sir James Galway
Born 12/8/1939 in Belfast, Ireland.
Galway began his musical career as a young boy playing the pennywhistle. He moved up quickly, becoming the solo/principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1969. He retired this position to embark on a highly successful solo career in 1975. With over 50 albums in circulation, knighthood bestowed on him in June 2001 by Queen Elizabeth II and a wide variety of music performances, Galway is well known in non flute and even non-musician circles.
Geoffrey Gilbert
5/28/1914 - 1989
Gilbert began playing the pennywhistle at age 6 and went on to become well respected and widely known both as a performer and teacher. He won the principal spot in the London Philharmonic Orchestra at age 19 and later became principal of the Royal Philhamonic, among other orchestras.
Michel Debost
One of the premier flutists of the French school, he attended the Conservatoire de Paris, and studied with Jan Merry, Gaston Crunelle, and Marcel Moyse. He has won the major international competitions for his instrument (Moscow, Prague, Geneva, Munich, Turin).
For many years, he was Principal Flute in the "Orchestre de Paris" under music directors Munch, Karajan, Solti and Barenboim. He has toured the United States as a soloist every year since 1963. In addition, he succeeded Jean-Pierre Rampal as Professor at the Conservatoire de Paris.
The National Flute Association a not for profit institution, is the largest flute organization in the world. It was founded to encourage a higher standard of artistic excellence for the flute, its performers, and its literature. Members include leading soloists, orchestral players, college and university professors, adult amateurs, and students of all ages. NFA annual conventions are held in major cities in the U.S.
Canadian Flute Association provides flute lovers with the opportunity to gain and share knowledge about the instrument through quality musical events.
